A smiley-face in outer
space?

`Scientists with the ESA say this peculiar image is located at a distance of about 4.5 billion light-years from our planet and comprises trillions of stars. The celestial image has been in outer space long before any life appeared on Earth.
Now that humans have created telescopes to see far into outer space, the image looks like two glowing eyes with a button nose and several curved lines that form a face with a smile! Astronomers say the two eyes are two faraway galaxies, the white button nose is also a galaxy and the curved lines forming a face and a smile are actually arcs caused by an effect known as “strong gravitational lensing.”
According to: spacetelescope.org, “Massive structures in the universe exert such a powerful gravitational pull that they can warp the spacetime around them and act as cosmic lenses which can magnify, distort and bend the light behind them. This phenomenon, crucial to many of Hubble’s discoveries, can be explained by Einstein’s theory of general relativity.” For this reason, the ring like structure forming the cosmic “smiley face” is being called the “Einstein Ring.”
News outlets across the world have been reporting on this heavenly smiley-face from outer space for months now. In an unrelated story, NASA experts announced that it is highly unlikely we’re alone in the universe and they are hopeful of finding alien life within the next two decades.
“I think in the next 20 years we will find out we are not alone in the universe,” said NASA astronomer Kevin Hand in footage posted on YouTube. NASA Administrator Charles Bolden agreed with Hand’s prediction, adding, “It’s highly improbable in the limitless vastness of the universe that we humans stand alone.”
With the expected launch of the James Webb Space Telescope in 2018, NASA’s planet-hunting mission will feature a new piece of equipment designed to study infrared light, making it easier to spot planets outside our solar system. But NASA may need even more powerful telescopes to detect any possible alien life.
“To find evidence of actual life is going to take another generation of telescopes,” admits Matt Mountain, director of the Space Telescope Science Institute. “And to do that, we’re going to need new rockets, new approaches to getting into space, new approaches to large telescopes — highly advanced optical systems.”
When I read the above stories around the same news cycle they made me wonder how scientists could be so committed to looking for life in outer space, yet dismiss the possibility of a Creator who has left so much evidence of His existence. His artistic beauty exists all around us — something not seen on any other planet. Yet, they refuse to give Him credit. It’s as simple as the Bible put it at Hebrews 3:4, “For every house is built by someone, but He who built all things is God.” — New King James Version.
Who of us would look at a picture of a simple smiley face and assume it came into existence on its own? Yet, no one ever raised the possibility that this happy face in heaven, which is clearly seen billions of light years away, could be more than a coincidence. Who knows, there could be other, even more awe-inspiring “artwork,” waiting to be discovered out there — artwork that reflects intelligence and deliberate design. Short of seeing God, how much proof do some people need?
Science tells us fractals (complex patterns like snowflakes) and chaos exist in nature but not codes and symbols. These codes and symbols include music, blueprints, language, math and art. These do not occur without a designer. Chaos can produce patterns, but never codes or symbols. Codes, for example, store information, which is not a property of matter and energy alone. Information like what is stored in our DNA requires a separate entity. This does not happen by accident. Repeated experiments prove codes and symbols are not a product of chaos or coincidence, but of creation.
Think about it. For billions of years there has been a giant happy face floating in outer space, one that can only be seen and appreciated by advanced humans. Why would this not warrant a conversation about a Designer? Trillions of stars exist and move according to God’s will as explained in Isaiah 40:26: “Look up at the sky! Who created the stars you see? The one who leads them out like an army, he knows how many there are and calls each one by name!” — Good News Translation.
If this Creator “leads them out like an army,” couldn't He also arrange them into art? He clearly created humans to be artists in His image. Still, many scientists deny His existence while searching for life on other planets. I ask myself, what is wrong with this picture? Why can’t they see what we see?
Perhaps it’s because to believe in God, like art, means to surrender yourself to a higher power. Art, like God, infringes on the mystery of life and love that’s impossible to fully explain or comprehend. Art is an expression of life. Art is an expression of love. But where there is art, there is always an artist. That’s just one reason why I believe in God and it has given me my very own smiley face.
