Lesson for us.
Ezra himself had a notable genealogy, he was an Aaronic priest, descended from Eleazar and Phinehas, and from the high priest Seraiah who was executed by Nebuchadnezzar.
The Insight book says " he exhibited unusual zeal in searching the official documents of his nation, and it is evidently due to his efforts that we have the accurate record Chronicles gives us...he had God's spirit..and...God guided him with a view to preserving a great portion of Israel's history ".
Later historians such as Josephus and Luke have much to thank Ezra for, and we can be grateful for his painstaking care in compiling these records.
The book of Chronicles serves to completely demolish the view of some critics that the Bible is more myth than history.
Just as we can check our own birth records today in most lands, we can similarly trace the records in Chronicles from Ezra's day down to Adam.
These lists of names are real people, many of whom we know from the Bible accounts we've already read. We can learn more about them by understanding their family relationships.
Do you approach this seemingly endless list of names reluctantly, with less than normal enthusiasm?
These lists contain fascinating details if we care to look for them.
These birth records were once stored at the temple in Jerusalem. Possibly from where Matthew gained the insight for his opening chapter to his Gospel account.
The one thing Jesus's enemies seem to have never challenged was his line of descent.
Because they couldn't.
All due to the work of this faithful man, Ezra.
